About this listen

'A story so incredible you'd think it was fiction' – James Patterson

Winner of the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award.

The shocking true story of the breathtaking rise and collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup founded by Elizabeth Holmes, written by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end.

Seen as the female Steve Jobs, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup ‘unicorn’ promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by wealthy investors, Theranos sold shares that valued the company at more than $9 billion.

There was just one problem: the technology didn’t work . . .

Despite threats of legal action, brave whistleblowers started to talk. They revealed a culture of intimidation and secrecy, technology that repeatedly failed, results sent to real patients that were incorrect but upon which life-changing medical decisions were being made, with devastating consequences.

The riveting story behind The Dropout, in Bad Blood, John Carreyrou investigates the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and scandal set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

I found this book having read the initial WSJ article and been captivated by the story of Elizabeth Holmes - If you are similarly intrigued you will enjoy this detailed account which follows the story from start to finish.

The only gripe I had was that there was almost too much detail in parts - for example no character is ever just 'driving their car' it is always more along the lines of 'he sat at the wheel of his shiny black AUDI 2017 SUV with tinted windows and a matte finish, a slight dent was visible in the passenger side door from a recent scrape with a blue 2008 Ford in a local grocery parking lot when he popped out to pick up steaks for his wife Belinda...'!!! This level of excruciating detail lends authenticity, but did drag a little by the end.

Overall though I really enjoyed this book and feel I know all there is to know about the Theranos debacle, which I'm sure will make me very fun at parties.

Very good if you're intrigued by the story

Gripping book which at times I had to force myself to remember this was real, it happened and it went on for years. Quite scary how having charisma and knowing a few medical terms could allow Elizabeth to fool so many people, mainly herself. Never boring, well laid out and read.

Fantastic. It shouldn't be real but it is!!

A fascinating account of life in the fast lane. I didn’t believe the reviews, It’s not often you can say that about a non-fiction book. But once I started I really could not put this book down.
Nicely told and easy to understand even though there was a lot of people in it. Great job.

Absorbing and scary
